Both grades came up with wins against Gunnedah, instilling some confidence in the group.
The reserves took a while to warm to the task with the first goal coming after about 20 minutes but they ran away with it afterwards defeating Gunnedah 5-0.
“It took a while to settle but we held possession well,” coach Darrel Smith said.
“Where we were lacking was not being quite as accurate with our kicking as we could have been,” he said.
“If we can control the ball and keep it at our feet we can create chances.”
First grade continued on the day’s success for Moree defeating their opponents 8-3.
“We controlled the ball well and there were a number of attacking raids from both sides,” Smith said.
Moree scored 15 minutes into the game, kicking goals fairly regularly after that.
“All season we’ve been able to create chances but we’ve lacked in the final pass or shoot for goal and need to hit the target,” he said.
“It’s a bit disappointing we didn’t make the semis but this is a positive way to end the season and everyone’s keen for next year.”
Gunnedah was in a similar boat to Moree in terms of numbers.
“We had six fresh players for A grade on Saturday which was great because normally we only have one,” Smith said.
“We’ll be trying to recruit new players for next year,” he said.
Juniors Jess Maher and Simon Davey have stepped-up to assist, and Smith is hopeful the club next year might be able to make a deal with the junior club to have the division one games played at their oval before the games to entice a bigger crowd.
“That’s something we’d like to discuss with the local junior club as a possibility next year,” Smith said.
“It goes in cycles but success brings crowds,” he said.
They’ll also be on the lookout for another coach as Smith doubled his role for both teams this season.
Smith said they would look for registrations about the end of January but in the meantime he encouraged everyone to join the indoor futsal competition at the PCYC.
“I’ll be trying to recruit some of the Wednesday night players for next season too,” Smith said
