After nearly 10 years organiser, Jeff Nixon, continues to be impressed.
Whether it was the 1550 riders, the 30 sweep riders or anyone else, it was all mainly incident free - except for a few bumps, bruises and the occasional broken bone.
“One bloke broke both his arms, went to the hospital, got them plastered up and was somehow back out riding that afternoon,” Nixon said.
Keen riders from Victoria, Bourke, Nowra, Roma, the Sunshine Coast, Newcastle and Mackay travelled for the weekend with some arriving just after 2am on Friday morning.
“I don’t know why people continue to come back, but they just say they love the track and love the atmosphere,” Nixon said.
“We had people travel from all over the place and it’s what sets the ride apart – all the city riders don’t have the option of riding on the wide, open countryside.
“Some of them commented on the fact they couldn’t believe when they came out of the scrub and over the crest it would open up and they could see for miles.”
The ‘enchanted forest’ brought several riders undone after a brief shower of rain hit on Saturday morning, but slippery mud wasn’t the only obstacle under the canopy.
“There were a few low-hanging branches that upset a few riders, but they’re only there to slow them down,” Nixon laughed.
“The rain was just enough to settle the dust but because no sun gets through the ‘enchanted forest’ it was described as being almost like glass.”
Nixon believed the amount of riders in attendance showed it was a bigger sport than most people were aware.
“One bloke said he hit 170 kilometres an hour on ‘conrod straight’.
“It’s the only trail ride in the country you can hit those speeds,” he added.
Adding to the entertainment on Saturday night were the lawnmower races which Nixon said were held for the first time.
“I’ve never seen someone wheel stand a lawnmower like I did,” he said.
Preparations will soon get underway for 2015.
