Their season concluded at the weekend when they were outgunned 74-10 by a rampant Walgett in a match best described by coach Chris Kirkland as a “long day at the office.”
“We would have been one of the only clubs to not have a forfeit for the entire season,” he said.
Kirkland said the lack of numbers of players willing to travel contributed to the heavy defeat.
“We didn’t get the interest like we’ve had for most of the season.
“It’s been a tough year; it was our first year back in the competition and we were the only side to play the top three teams, but they’ll be better for it.”
The under 17s continued their successful season when they accounted for Walgett 70-36 to set-up a major semi-final this weekend.
Kirkland said the game would see the two best under 17 sides he’s seen play against each other.
“Our boys finished second and they’ll play Bourke. It’ll be a good game of footy,” he said.
“Their season has been the product of five years of good training and they’ve had a couple of losses this year which have been good for them.”
Meanwhile, the under 14s were defeated 38-16 which sets up an elimination semi-final this weekend.
“They’ll possibly finish third but that’s still to be confirmed,” Kirkland said.
“They’ve had a phenomenal season.
“They’ve got a few 11 and 12-year-olds who are playing so they’ll be around for a while.
“They started the season as kids who had hardly played footy, but they’ve developed massively.
“Next year they’ll be even better.”
Kirkland was confident the future of the club looked positive.
“We started our first grade team from scratch this year and we’ve been in nearly every game.
“We’ve exceeded expectations.”
Kirkland said the support from the local community had been incredible,
“We haven’t had as many wins as we’d have liked, but it’s only going to benefit us next year.
“We’ll be a force in coming years,” he said.
