The project started four weeks ago and for the next few weeks the young people will hammer, paint and garden to assist both charitable movements as part of a construction course run through Fusion Training Solutions and JobLink Plus.
FTS trainer Mick Mather said the course would improve the ‘hands-on’ skills of young people and improve their chances of entering the work force through a Certificate II in Construction Pathways.
“Some of the work undertaken will include cement rendering, carpentry, door hanging, painting and the creation and enhancement of garden beds,” he said.
“It’s great that these young people can learn basic ‘hand-eye’ coordination skills and assist the likes of the PCYC and The Salvos.”
Mr Mather said FTS had teamed up with JobLink Plus – which offers assistance to the long-term unemployed and those in need - to run the course.
“The boys will be getting trained up rather than just passing a book around,” he said.
“They get into groups, make new friends and we’re working on the social side of things as well. It gets them out of the house, off the Xbox and that’s what we want.”
Participants will also obtain a first aid certificate at the completion of the course with the first aid test completed yesterday.
Mr Mather said due to its success more courses would run throughout the year.
