There was even an appearance by socialites the Kardashian sisters who nearly outshone the ‘real’ celebrities who turned up for the big day.
Former test cricketers Peter Taylor, Mark Taylor, Ian Healy and Darren Lehmann joined tennis great John Fitzgerald, AFL identity Shane Wakelin, golf caddie Peter Bessey, local pro Matt McGuire and well-known Moree poet Murray Hartin in an auction.
Organiser Lee Estens said the auction for the celebrities raised $27,600 which was a record for that part of the day.
Then it was down to business.
Included in the 18-hole course were special novelty holes where players were required to do a variety of different shots.
“We had people hitting off bales of hay blindfolded, we had a golf pro shot and putt for cash around obstacles in the form of gingerbread to name a few,” Mrs Estens said.
“We had another hole where people could receive a massage while waiting to take their shot.”
Mrs Estens said the focus of the day was not about the golf but about winning the best dressed and spirit of the day prizes which included vouchers to the pro-shop.
Veteran golfer Ron Harborne picked up the hole in one on the putt for cash.
Mrs Estens thanked the many people who contributed to such an enjoyable day and said it wouldn’t have been possible without them.
“We are so lucky to have such a wonderful, generous community and players have flown from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to take part in the day,” she said.
“Without the help of the supporters and sponsors this day doesn’t happen.”
Mrs Estens said on behalf of herself, Sarah Young, Joanne Houlahan and Myrna Harris they would like to thank everyone involved for helping to empower children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn with money raised from the annual event going to Variety - The Children’s Charity.
This year the day was to help raise funds for Moree’s entry into the 2014 Brisbane to Busby’s Bore (Sydney) Variety Bash.
The Champion will have a follow-up with the winners and more on how much the day raised next week.
