This is where Tamworth Moneycare comes in and helps out.
Moneycare provides advocacy for people who find themselves in difficult situations.
Sandy Avis and Kim Abel might be based in Tamworth but they visit the Moree Plains Shire once every fortnight and in their visit on Tuesday they thought they should make it known.
Ms Avis and Ms Abel said while they didn’t offer advice, they did provide options for those in need.
“We liaise with creditors and assess a person’s financial situation and provide a money plan budget,” Ms Abel said.
“We can get debts waived and we do deal with house repossession.
“Our service is for anyone who is in a financial crisis as much as it is for those wanting to avoid a financial crisis. There’s no criteria – it’s open to anyone.”
While other financial counsellors ask for a fee for their use Moneycare is a free service.
“We’re funded by the Department of Fair Trading and our funding is under review so it is important people know we offer a free service. We need to get it out there that we’re wanted and the demand for us in recent times has been continuous since the start of last year,” Ms Abel said. “We try to empower people by providing them with different options.”
To make an appointment phone Ms Abel (0429 832 203), Ms Avis (0456 629 531), Gerry Turner (0409 749 950) or the office on 6752 1583.
