The MLSAA felt it was unwise to spend significant funds on the saleyards when livestock sales had been low due to the drought.
As a consequence of the downturn in stock they will have a 12 month reprieve from rental for the complex.
Councillor Brendan Munn said at last week’s council meeting that any money spent in the meantime would come from council reserves.
An analysis of the market in 12 months’ time has been recommended before any future works are proposed on the site.
Cr Munn asked council staff to review their position as he believed the town and people of Moree needed to make sure it remained the premier livestock centre in a difficult time.
The saleyards would be maintained and/or upgraded by using steel structures instead of wood.
Cr Munn said the amenities needed work but to upgrade those would mean a loss of income and believed it should be done in consultation with the budget review.
