AFTER 39 years in the police force, Moree-based Senior Sergeant Brian Willet has seen a lot, but no-one was more surprised than he was when he received the prestigious award for Police Prosecutor of the Year.
Snr Sgt Willett was presented with the award at a conference in Parramatta last Friday.
His fellow police prosecutors nominated him for the award in July.
The award is presented to a police prosecutor who demonstrates superior knowledge, advocacy skills, ability to keep up with changes in the law and be a leader amongst other prosecutors.
Snr Sgt Willett is one of just two country police prosecutors to receive the award in the 10 years since it was first awarded.
Snr Sgt Willet has been a police prosecutor for 31-and-a-half years, and he has served in Moree for 21 years in September.
“My job is extremely rewarding,” he said.
“It is satisfying to look after victims of crime and domestic violence and make sure the perpetrators of crime are dealt with appropriately by the court system.”
Snr Sgt Willet said it was “very much a surprise” to receive the award.
He first came to Moree for a six-month stint in 1991 and enjoyed his stay so much he decided to make Moree his permanent home.
Snr Sgt Willet is now the Area Prosecutor’s Co-ordinator for the North West and is in charge of the seven police prosecutors in the region.
His area covers Tenterfield, Scone, Walgett, Coonamble, Coonabarabran, Tamworth and everywhere in between.
“I’ve integrated into Moree and I like talking to people down the street and playing some golf when I can.”
However it is Snr Sgt Willett’s work ethic which earnt him the award.
“I take pride in doing my job to the best of my ability. I’m one of the good guys!” he laughed.
