Elderly resident harassed

AN elderly woman was left frightened after four men tried to break into her home in Moree.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, was talking to her daughter at 9pm last Wednesday when she could hear men bickering between themselves outside.

The men then proceeded to hit all of the windows around the house trying to scare the woman.

The daughter who was on the phone to the elderly lady when the incident occurred called the police when she realised what was going on.

“I rang 000 - worst thing I could have done! It was just a waste of time,” the woman said.

“They kept asking me stupid questions, like ‘Do they have weapons?’ and ‘Are they armed with anything?’.

“I wasn’t there so I didn’t know all of that,” she said.

The daughter then rang a next door neighbour of her mother’s and asked him to go and check on her.

“The men were gone by the time the neighbour got there,” she said.

The elderly woman has owned the house for 50 years and this is the second attempted break-in she has experienced.

Both times the men kicked in the wall of the living room.

“It’s horrible that my mother doesn’t feel safe in her own house.

“No-one should ever have to feel that way,” she said.
