Former Moree athlete competes in Canada

Sharnae Widders-Smith has recently returned from an athletics tour in Canada.

The 15-year-old participated in competitions in Vancouver and Kelowna.

She specialises in high jump but also competed in the long jump, 100 metres and 200 metres sprint events.

Widders-Smith currently lives in Armidale but is originally from Moree.

She was invited on the tour by Sports Travel Australia after stellar performances at her school athletics carnival.

“It was a great experience. It was my first time overseas so I was very excited,” Widders-Smith said.

She also had the opportunity to travel to the United States and visit Disneyland, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Las Vegas and Hollywood.

She meddled in two events on the tour against girls who were two years older.

“It was more challenging competing against girls who were 16 and 17 but I managed to go alright,” she said.

Local clubs and businesses were all kind enough to help with fundraising and donations.

Widders-Smith will return to Armidale to continue her training before competing at the North West athletics carnival in Tamworth next month.
