MOTORISTS travelling throughout the Barwon area are being urged to slow down this Queen's Birthday long weekend.
Barwon LAC Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Gavin Rattenbury said police would be out in force over the four-day period, along with highway patrol vehicles from other areas.
Double demerit points will be in effect from 12.01am today, until 11.59pm on Monday and apply for all speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.
Det Insp Rattenbury said fatigue was also a major concern for police with many motorists trying to travel long distances and pack as much as possible into their long weekend.
"Drivers need to plan their breaks well and ensure that they are not over extending themselves in terms of adequate rest and time spent behind the wheel," the inspector said.
"All motorists are asked to concentrate, slow down and take care over the long weekend so you or your passengers don’t become another road toll statistic," he said.
"Speed limits have been set for a reason and should be adhered to. This also applies to the numerous road works currently underway in the area."
Motorists should also be aware that double demerit points apply to school zone offences with tomorrow a gazetted school day.
