The Moree Boxing Academy will be hosting the event with eight local boxers stepping into the ring for three two-minute rounds.
Brett Wright, Coen van Dugteren, Brent McDonald, Keagan Fernando, Ruben Morley, Jarom Haines, Jake Hetherington and Rowena Chapman will be flying the Moree flag against some hard hitting City opponents.
MBA head coach Danny Cheetham is gearing up for a big night of boxing action.
“It’s a big event on the NSW boxing calendar,” Cheetham said.
“Our boxers have trained hard.
“They are fit, fast and ready to take the ring this Saturday night.”
One of the main events during the evening will be female boxing sensation Rowena Chapman who will take on former Zimbabwean Michelle Muchatuta who is fighting out of Five Docks, In Sydney.
“Rowe has what it takes to be a superstar of the sport; if she applies herself, which she has been doing, I believe she will box for NSW and go on to represent Australia,” Cheetham said.
Chapman said she had been training twice a day, six days a week in preparation for the weekend’s bout.
“I have been working hard the past three weeks,” Chapman said.
“I don’t think fitness will be an issue; I’m excited! It’s going to be a great night.”
Chapman debuted in 2010 against Eleni Pippos and won.
Pippos went on to win the silver medal at the Australian Championships.
“She spars against the men and never takes a backwards step; Rowe is ready for a big night,” Cheetham said.
Saturday night’s tournament is the first of three rounds with the other two held at Tamworth and Sydney.
Country won the series last year 2-1 and will be looking to defend their title.
Fourteen-year-old Coen van Dugteren will be making his boxing debut, whilst the other boxers will be stepping into the ring to keep their record intact.
On Tuesday afternoon, Cheetham was fine tuning the competitors with a bit of sprint training.
“We are just doing the finishing touches; everyone is keen and ready to go,” he said.
Tickets can be purchased for the tournament this Saturday at the Moree Memorial Hall.
Doors will open at 6.30pm with the first fight set to start at 7.30pm.
A bar and canteen facilities will be available.
