Elva has had an adventurous life.
Growing up in Gravesend she used to walk eight miles down the railway to get to school.
She is the youngest of seven brothers and two sisters and witnessed her brothers involvement in both World War I and II.
She worked in the Land Army making parachute nets and cargo nets, and then moved to live with her sister.
The 60s brought a wedding and a change in location for Elva when her husband and her moved to Pilliga.
Elva was always interested in Aboriginal culture and artwork, and her fascination took her all around Australia discovering and learning about the significant background of our country.
Sadly, as retirement crept closer her beloved husband passed away in a farming accident. Since then she has retired in Moree.
Elva is Jane Rohde’s grandmother’s younger sister and has known her ever since she can remember.
“Elva used to knit baby clothes for me; she even knitted baby clothes for my children as well,” Mrs Rohde said.
Elva has been described as a generous, family orientated lady who never had children of her own but dedicated her time to the upbringing of her family’s younger children.
Elva’s birthday party on Saturday saw her friends and family from all around Australia come together.
There were also some very special guests including Moree Plains Shire Council Mayor, Katrina Humphries and State Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries with some lovely flowers.
A great day was had by all and Mrs Rohde thanked everyone who helped make Elva’s 100th birthday unforgettable.
