TRAVELLERS on the Mallawa Rd, 75km west of Moree, could be forgiven for doing a double take at the lonely three-quarter racetrack rising from a wheat paddock.

But come the June long weekend this little North West nook comes alive with racing fever as visitor numbers swell into the hundreds for the annual Mallawa Picnic Race Meeting.
Mallawa Picnic Race Club President, Rob Onus, said the day was one of the last traditional country race meetings, attracting horses and visitors from far and wide.
“I know that 50 years ago there were dozens of bush picnic race meetings, but Mallawa is one of the last of its kind, which adds to the appeal. It’s a dirt racecourse off the beaten track and everyone is there for a great day of racing and fun, it’s a wonderful atmosphere.
“Country people tend to identify with the local community and it’s a chance to catch up with friends who you may not see from year to year.”
And the local Mallawa folk certainly don’t shy away from a good time.
Preparations are well underway for the district’s biggest annual event with the track now ready for some of NSW’s best picnic race horses.
“We have horses and trainers coming everywhere between Brewarrina to Inverell as well as some very competitive local horses.
Saint Lenny, whose owners have strong links to the Mallawa Picnic Race Committee, will be well supported, as will local Spot Syndicate horse Chart.
Macho Nacho, part owned by Mr Onus, had it’s first run in 12 months at The Moree Picnics and together with other local horses, will run in the B&W Rural Mallawa Cup, the richest race in the AgVantage Commodities Golden Triangle.
There will be just as much action off the track, with visitors encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the course prior to the start of racing
The fun continues into the night, with a Brisbane band Horsebox keeping revellers entertained until closing at 10pm.
“I have been reliably informed by the Brett boys that they are quite a good band,” Mr Onus laughed.
Entry to the race day is $20 and open to everyone. A bus will be available from Moree and will return after the races.
The Advantage Golden Triangle Picnic Races got off to a fantastic start at Moree recently and its all systems go at Mallawa for the second leg of the circuit.
The Mallawa Picnics Races will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Mallawa Racetrack, west of Moree. Follow the signs from the Gwydir Highway.
