The students from Victoria were staying in a backpackers' hostel on Kent Street on Wednesday night when the men, aged 22 and 21, allegedly forced their way into the girls' room.

The men then indecently assaulted the girls, who are aged between 14 and 16, police say.

A teacher eventually ejected the alleged offenders before calling police the next morning.

The duo were later charged with a combined total of six counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Both men have surrendered their passports and will appear in Downing Local Court on September 23.

Two other men arrested over the alleged assault were released without charge.

A police spokesman said it is believed the girls were not well known to the alleged offenders.

He said the two 22-year-old men released without charge assisted police, leading to the eventual arrest and charges against the French nationals.

The spokesman said it is not clear why the incident was not reported until the next morning.
