Upwards of 70 people were at the weir water skiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing on Sunday afternoon.
Moree Plains Shire councillor James von Drehnen couldn’t be happier to see the weir getting used.
“It’s fantastic to have so many people out enjoying the water,” von Drehnen said.
“I have been using the weir for about six or seven years and we seem to get new boats turn up every year.
“It’s very exciting,” he said.
A main concern for von Drehnen and members of the water ski club is inexperienced boat drivers not following the boating rules.
“Our biggest challenge is keeping boats running in an anti-clockwise direction,” he said.
The Maritime Police make a visit two or three times a year to check for licences, along with boating and skiing insurance.
“It’s also vital that skiers in the water raise their hand to let other boats know they are in the water,” von Drehnen said.
Unfortunately rubbish has been left lying around campsites which is another concern for both von Drehnen and the ski club.
“Technically the Tareelaroi Weir is not a camping spot. It would be unfortunate to ban people from camping because of the rubbish left at the sites,” he said.
Plans of a working bee in the coming months could be on the agenda.
“The weir is not owned by any organisation and work done to it is purely volunteer based,” von Drehnen said.
The weir is set to be popular destination over the coming months.
Stay safe and enjoy the action.
