With round seven of the MX Nationals coming to Moree on July 18, series director Kevin Williams is urging people to come and support this “big, big event”.
It will be the first - and probably last - chance locals have to see Moree Motorcycle Club life member Tye Simmonds in an elite race, before his career takes him to America at the end of the season.
Indeed, part of the reason the round was relocated to Moree - after original host Port Macquarie recently fell through - was so that the people of Moree could be rewarded for the strong support they have given to Simmonds over the years.
Williams said it is “guaranteed” that the MMC will put on a good show, after the club had responded with “100 per cent” effort on short notice.
“If I thought for one moment they weren’t up to it, we wouldn’t have gone there,” he said, adding that many other places were clamouring to replace Port Macquarie.
According to Williams, the Boolooroo Raceway is a “very good venue”, which will offer exciting viewing for both live viewers and those watching on TV.
“I think the track is going to produce some very close racing.”
Boolooroo will be receiving a full field of 120 riders: 40 in each of the Pro Open, Pro Lites and under-19 classes. As well as all the top Aussies, there will be racers from America, Britain and New Zealand.
Williams is urging people to attend, pointing out that such elite sport rarely comes to regional Australia. He said that if everything goes smoothly and the town responds well, Moree stands a good chance of receiving a three-year hosting contract.
That would be good news for the local economy, with Williams expecting the MX Nationals roadshow to provide a $350,000 to $400,000 boost. “It’s a big, big event to be coming to Moree, that’s for sure.”
Practice begins at 8.30am, with qualifying and racing starting at about 10.30am. Tickets can be bought on the day, and cost $30 for adults, $15 for children (five to 15) and $70 for families (two adults, two children). Under-5s are free.
With two rounds to go, Jay Marmont leads the Pro Open standings on 295 points, followed by Billy Mackenzie on 279 and Simmonds on 275. Rounding out the top six are Cheyne Boyd (264), Dean Ferris (258) and Cody Cooper (255).
The final round is at Coolum on July 25.
