Bryans ready to chase his second Boolooroo Cup

14 May, 2009 11:01 AM
Moree hoop Jim Bryans chases his second Boolooroo Cup in three years when he reunites with Crowntreno at the B&W Rural Moree Picnics – round one of the Kenway and Clark Golden Triangle.

Bryans, who collared a treble at Talmoi last year before knocking off the Wean Cup with Crowntreno, renews old ties with the gelding on Saturday.

The jockey, who won the Boolooroo Cup in 2007 on Jazzmaker, also rides Disaster Den in the 950m Chesterfield Australia Moree Bracelet for Garah trainer Campbell Roberts and Flight Officer in the 950m Fiducian Financial Services Class B Handicap for boss, Peter Sinclair.

Bryans last year grabbed a slice of the Golden Triangle bonuses and this year plans to win the $500 BMC Jockeys’ Challenge on home turf.

“The bonuses are a great incentive – especially when you win them,” Bryans grinned.

Crowntreno’s trainer Martin Fernando also has his eye on the $500 Fred Monckton Bearing Centre Trainers’ Challenge, and plans a three-horse attack on the Boolooroo Cup.

Stable star Crowntreno (66.5kg) will join stablemates Nardoola Kid (62kg) and Half Circle in the Moree Picnic Race Club’s signature event.

“They’re at home so why not start the three of them,” Fernando said.

“They’ll carry the weight all right; they carry Doug (Fernando) every day in work so there’s no worries with them handling a bit of puddin’,” he laughed.

“I’ve thrown Half Circle in because we can’t get a run for him anywhere. We had him in at Dalby but he drew barrier 10 up there, and it’s a long way to go to come back empty.

“Then we got balloted out at Tamworth and were thinking of going out to Brewarrina, but that’s a long way as well.”

Ashley Boyd, who rode a treble at last year’s Moree picnics, will steer Half Circle and stablemate Flying Flags in the 950m Landmark Maiden Plate. Comeback rider Mark Webber will jump aboard track specialist Nardoola Kid.

“Nardoola Kid could be the horse to tip us out. He’s won four out of six at Moree – he loves the track,” Fernando said. The trainer said Crowntreno, winner of the Moree Cotton Cup back in February, had genuine excuses when down the track in last Sunday’s Gunnedah Cup.

“He got trapped three-wide from the 12 barrier, so there really wasn’t much we could do about it,” Fernando said. He’s raced against good horses his last two runs and I think I’ve got him on the ball now – and we’ve freshened him up this week.

“He’s eating up like mad, so there’s no reason not to start him,” he said.
