Moree Junior Rugby Club will be running a program that allows children from five to 15 years to come and try rugby union for no cost, in a fun and safe environment.
The sessions, will begin today at 4pm, cater for all abilities and experience levels, with skills drills leading up to modified rugby games headlining a range of fun and exciting activities.
Try Rugby is a professionally-run program by the Australian Rugby Union, which encourages physical activity and motor skill development for boys and girls in a relaxed rugby community setting, where no experience is necessary.
Safety is a major priority when training with children. The activities and games are modified to suit the player’s physical capability, health, skill level and experience.
Try Rugby ambassador and Wallabies star Matt Giteau says the program is extremely beneficial and lots of fun for boys and girls.
“Try Rugby is pretty awesome,” Giteau said.
“You can learn some skills and teamwork that I’ve picked up along the way to becoming a Wallaby.
“It’s great fun, especially with your mates.”
Local boys Jack Slack (Moree Public School), Harry King (Mallawa Public School), Max Gaynor, Will Haddad (both St Philomena’s), Brandon Humphries (Moree Public School), Hamish Christie (Bellata Public School), Nathan Ledingham (St Philomena’s), Hayden Mills (Moree Public School), Will Smith and Jock Livingston (St Philomena’s), Angus King (Mallawa Public School), Jack Maunder (Moree Christian School) and Bradley Ireland (Moree Public School) are all in the current under 11 team and are the best of mates.
They, and the rest of their teammates, get together to train and have fun every Thursday evening at the Weebolla Rugby grounds. Once the season starts, these boys play up to four games per carnival every second weekend.
They may not go to the same school but through the fun of rugby, they have established a firm friendship.
