Touch football heats up

24 Nov, 2009 11:33 AM
The Moree Touch Football Gala Carnival took place on Sunday with a fun day for all.

The hot conditions made for some heated up competition with about 50 locals participating.

Numbers were low for division one so the children were divided into teams playing with the referees and committee members. Both games ended up in two draws. The standout player was Jason Saunders.

The games are set up for division one so that the girls have an equal chance to get involved to score tries. After a boy scores a try he has to pass the ball to one of the girls to score. “This has improved the game of the girls in the team, encouraging them to participate more,” referee and coaching coordinator Andrew Ryan said.

Division two had four sides on the day with Haddad Bulk the victorious team.

“Beau Haddad was the intercept king, he made five intercepts on the day running straight through the line and scored five tries running the whole length of the field.

“His timing was beautiful,” Ryan said.

Tyrone Raveneau played well for the Kill Em All Pest Control team. “He never gave in all day, he kept putting his hand up in defence and attack,” Ryan said.

Danielle Stewart was an outstanding player for the division two Stewards Earthworks team.

Two sides played in division three with Alyssa McGrady the standout player.

Special thanks goes to the parents, referees and committee members; a special mention to Bernice Smith for coordinating division three on the day.

An inter-town junior touch football gala day is planned for the new year, please keep an eye out in Moree Champion for an upcoming draw announcement.
