The Kamilaroi Dreamers and the Richard Smith Memorial teams represented Moree at the First Contact Sports and Cultural Festival in Brisbane at the weekend.
The teams played in the secondary mixed schools division with 24 school teams.
Both teams performed very well and a player was selected from each team to take part in the Battle of the States competition.
Jamie Sampson and Brian Saunders Jnr were selected in the NSW under 18 team based on their performances on the day.
The Richard Smith Memorial Team has been training together for three years and are dedicated to keeping the memory alive of the keen local footballer.
Their first game was a close one, which they lost to the Wagtails four to five.
The second match was a tight, very exciting game against the One Fourth team, which they lost at a close three to four.
In the third match they were victorious with an outstanding performance.
They played Wynham at seven to four.
Dawn Barlow, one of the team coordinators was impressed with their sportsmanship.
“They all played together well as a team, they took everything on the chin, even though they were disappointed with the first two matches they came out guns blazing and won the third,” Barlow said.
The Kamilaroi Dreamers progressed to the quarters and semi-final.
They played five matches on the day.
The first game was against the Toowoomba Allstars.
Being the first match, it was hard, but once they got into the rhythm they played well, winning eight to five.
The second game they played versus Kingston College and won easily at 13-nil.
The third game was a tough match and was try for try.
Their opponent was Currimbin High School, who won three to two.
In the quarters they played Toomelah, ending with a one all draw.
The match progressed to a drop-off in extra time.
The Dreamers scored in the first six and Toomelah didn’t score.
In the semi-finals they played the Trackadigenese and got beaten seven to three in a good, exciting game.
In the Kamilaroi Dreamers team, four are grandchildren and all are family members of Lynette Saunders.
They play in memoriam to her.
