Moree Little Athletics is ready and set to go.
The new club started its first training on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Oval.
The competition will take place each week at 5.30pm Tuesday with three main events, the throw, jump and run.
The little athletes will be rewarded for their participation and for improving their times, to compete against the clock or the jump heights rather than each other.
Four teams will be set up, similar to school sporting houses allowing the competitors to gain points for their group.
The aim is to award personal best times rather than winning races, encouraging school aged children to participate, to better themselves and try new things rather than competing individually.
The club will compete in a zone competition with other towns including Inverell, Gunnedah, Tamworth and Glen Innes.
The running events will include the 100, 200 and 400 metres and for ages 13 and over the 1500 metres.
Shot put, distance, javelin and hurdles will also be part of the program.
Moree Little Athletics needs some parents to help assist in the running of events and are looking for sponsors as one hurdle they are facing is equipment is much needed.
“Any specialised coaches that can guide or offer advice is more than welcome,” Moree Little Athletics Club president Andrew Ryan said.
About 70 children have signed up so far. The club is open to ages from five to 17.
If you’re interested another registration day will be held this Thursday at 5.30pm at Taylor Oval or call Andrew on 0427 846 572.
