Moree husband and wife Troy and Wendy Caban will compete in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association National Finals on the Gold Coast this weekend.
Troy has been competing in the sport for more than 15 years, while Wendy has been involved in the sport for about 10 years.
Wendy will compete in the breakaway roping and barrel racing, while Troy will compete in the rope and tie and the team roping.
Wendy is also in contention for the overall Cowgirl title, which is awarded to the best female rider in all the events.
Wendy is currently in good form in the barrel riding, but is not at peak form in the breakaway.
“I’m just having a bad run,” she said.
Wendy has been riding Spider in barrel racing for about six years and has been training Duke for the last two years in breakaway.
The top 15 competitors qualify for the national finals.
Wendy qualified in second for the barrel racing and sixth in the breakaway.
The overall cowgirl is judged on the two ladies events and Wendy is one of only six who has qualified for both events.
“I hope I get up there; I expect nothing; I’ll just try the best I can,” Wendy said.
Troy will be competing in the rope and tie, while he will again team-up with his brother Dale in the team roping.
Troy has been riding Doctor in the rope and tie for the past six years, while he has been riding Mo for more than two-and-a-half years in the team roping.
Troy is hoping for positive results after putting in a week of training in the lead up to the event.
“Hopefully we will go really well (in the team roping),” Troy said.
The rodeo events will be staged over five rounds with the winners decided after the final round.
The National Rodeo Finals will be run at the Gold Coast Convention Centre from January 8 to January 11.
