Boxing tournament hosts women's fight

29 Apr, 2010 04:43 PM
WOMEN’S boxing may be only newly recognised as a sport in NSW, but Moree already has a star.

Rowena Chapman is a trailblazer in the sport.

After training for about three years, she has stepped up to the ring in the last eight to 10 months.

On May 8 she will take on Gold Coast boxer Eleni Pippos at the Moree Boxing Academy Boxing Tournament.

Coach Danny Cheetham said she has done everything right in preparation for the fight.

“No-one trains harder than Rowena in the gym,” he said.

“She spars with the boys and never takes a back step. She gives as good as she gets.”

He said despite getting her first blood nose during sparring just last week, she wiped it off, grit her teeth and just kept going as hard as ever.

“I see a big future for women’s boxing,” he said.

Chapman will be a force to reckon with as she is already looking forward to taking on the Queenslander.

“I am going to try and give her everything I’ve got and everything Danny’s taught me,” she said.

“I’m nervous but coach says nerves are good, it will be good to fight in front of a home crowd.”

Tickets are on sale every afternoon Monday to Friday from 5 to 7.30pm at the Moree Boxing Academy at the Moree Showgrounds.

Tickets for adults are $25.

Under 18 and aged pensioners are $15.
