Australian representatives live right here in Moree

Local brothers Jade and Robert Kennedy have been playing away from home in the Tahiti 7’s tournament.

They represented Australia in the all-indigenous side.

Their football skills are really taking them places as they have recently returned from playing in the Lloyd McDermott National Indigenous Men’s Rugby 7’s Tournament in Thailand.

During the 11-day rugby tour of Tahiti they played teams from all over the world and beat the USA and Fiji sides in the first rounds.

They made it to the semi-final of the guest tournament, which was played on Sunday night local time against the United States.

Unfortunately they were beaten 10 to seven.

Robert is the youngest player to be selected in a men’s side, he turns 17-years-old next week.

“The boys played very well with Robert Kennedy an outstanding player in the team,” the Lloyd McDermott rugby development team executive officer Tom Evans said.

Both brothers were selected in the under 16-year-olds national indigenous side from boarding school.

This was the first time they both played rugby union at Ipswich Grammar.

They were selected to represent the school side, then the state team for Queensland from their performance at school matches.

This led to them being selected for the national all-indigenous side.

Both boys have now finished school, Robert is an apprentice builder and Jade will start an apprentiship with Country Energy in the new year.

They look forward to playing for the Moree Boars under 18 A-Grade side next season.

The boys’ father and Moree Boars president Robert Kennedy Senior puts their success down to determination.

“We don’t push them, they want to play football and they work hard at it,” he said.
