Thousands sign NRMA Newell Highway petition

19 Nov, 2009 02:27 PM
Hoards have spoken it seems, with thousands of signatures recorded on the NRMA Newell Highway petition.

At least 1000 legitimate signatures have been recorded by the RTA, with hundreds more interstate and signatures without full details also recorded.

It seems the masses are making their voice heard when it comes to lowering the speed limit from 110 to 100km/h on the Newell Highway without public consultation.

NRMA regional director Graham Blight said the petition was going even better than expected.

“We have more than we need already,” Mr Blight said.

“With well over 1000 legitimate signatures we have gone well past the 500 we needed.”

“It’s not just us, all the shire councils are in the same frame of mind,” he said.

From here the signatures have been passed to Independent Member of Parliament, Dawn Fardell, who will present it to the government next week.

Mr Blight said he looks forward to a positive outcome.

“If the government accepts it, and I believe they have to, then they will have to come to get public consultation,” Mr Blight said.

There is still no cut off date, so anyone still hoping to sign the petition still has a chance.

“There’s no cut off date, we want this to be an ongoing representation to government on how the public feel about this issue,” Mr Blight said.

Anyone still wanting to sign the petition can do so at their local NRMA office.
