Concerned residents and council members will meet with Housing NSW representatives on November 20 to discuss social housing issues in Moree.
State Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said he would be part of the meeting, discussing issues with Housing NSW representatives from the Northern NSW office in Lismore.
The main topic will centre around the proposed development of 60 units in the Moree Plains Shire.
Mr Humphries said Housing NSW had received submissions put forth by residents in Moree, and a number of concerns were planned to be addressed at the meeting.
A letter he had received from Housing NSW had guaranteed that units planned for construction in Auburn St would only house older people or those with a disability, Mr Humphries said, although he supported the street’s residents in their argument that the units were two storeys high and not fitting with the aesthetics of the street.
“The public housing and social housing in most of our communities is too fractured,” he said.
Mr Humphries said taking a “holistic” approach, where social housing authorities and contractors were locally accessible, could be the best solution to the problem, as many social housing tenants were not being well-integrated into communities.
A Housing NSW media spokesperson said anyone in the community could lodge a submission regarding a project they were interested in.
“Of the 10 projects in Moree, eight have now finished their three-week notification period during which the community can lodge submissions.
“The notification period of the two remaining projects, one in Boston St and the other in Dover St, close on 19 November,” the spokesperson said.
