Moree Police Station could receive $10 million facelift

24/06/2008 12:05:00 PM
Moree Police Station could receive a $10.8 million renovation.

The station has been listed in the New South Wales Government Infrastructure Plan.

Barwon commander Wayne Starling said there was a proposal to build a new station by demolishing the external buildings and extending the station.

He said this would help bring Moree in line with modern building requirements and make it a functional area.

“It is a challenge at the moment because we are virtually working on top of each other,” Superintendent Starling said.

Privacy is also an issue as there is limited space to conduct confidential investigations.

The new station would include designed rooms for electronically recording and interviewing suspects and would consider sound-proofing.

Superintendent Starling said the conditions of the Moree station had been a concern for some time.

“We are all working in different areas and segregated, there are even areas where there are no amenities and exhibits are kept in steel crates; it is a very poor, haphazard set of buildings from the 1970’s,” he said.

Moree Police Station is the head station for the Barwon command and has had in excess of 100 people working in the building at one time.

The renovations would provide far more state-of-the-art technology to help allow better policing.

“Regardless of the conditions we work in the police still provide an efficient service and everyone comes to work highly motivated to help serve the community,” he said.

Superintendent Starling said the government had recognised the issue and Moree was waiting for a response from them.

The Moree Champion was unable to receive a response from the NSW Government at the time of print.
