MasterChef crowned

10 Aug, 2010 11:30 AM
Amanda Dyball has been crowned the Moree MasterChef.

Mrs Dyball took the accolade after a hard-fought one-hour cooking contest inside the Coles Moree branch, beating out fellow competitors Jeff Stockman and Angela Butt.

Each chef brought their culinary skills to the table, using the small window of time to create one main course for the judges to taste.

Mrs Dyball’s dish, with a main ingredient of beef fillets, came out on top, while Mr Stockman and Ms Butt used fish and chicken, respectively.

Judging the dishes were Moree Champion editor Pramil Masih, local connoisseur Claude Magarry, restaurateur Toby Osmond, and Coles regional manager Shonnea Nicol.

The beef, stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and served with green beans wrapped in bacon and mashed sweet potato, was an instant hit with the judges, securing Mrs Dyball’s win with a score of 36.5 out of a possible 40.

Mr Stockman came in second with his dish of sweet chilli barramundi served on a bed of mild salsa, the “Ocean Special”, scoring 33 points.

Ms Butt’s chicken served with mushroom sauce and vegetables received mild criticism from the judges, who agreed the meat was too dry, but she still came away with a respectable score of 28 out of 40.

“There was plenty of competition from the other contestants,” Mrs Dyball said after her win.

“I’m ready to do it again next year.”

Although not one of her signature dishes, Mrs Dyball said she was happy with what she had cooked, as it was a relatively simple dish with no expensive ingredients.

A crowd of spectators watched the proceedings, from contestants’ cooking through to the judging.

Coles provided onlookers with a wide variety of food to sample during the show.

Moree MasterChef was organised by Coles Moree store manager Lachlan Stewart, who believed Moree was the first town to hold an event of this sort.

Mrs Dyball walked away with a kitchen pack prize, valued at about $100.
