‘Limited options’ in battle with Housing NSW

09 Feb, 2010 12:59 PM
Moree Plains Shire Council faces limited options in its battle against Housing NSW.

Moree Plains Shire Mayor Katrina Humphries said last week that previous plans to negotiate with the State Government over water supply to the social housing properties was no longer an option.

She said it was because council had already approved supply to the properties in November 2009.

She said Moree council’s water and waste department had approved a “Section 64 Certificate” enabling water to be supplied to the sites throughout Moree.

Cr Humphries said while the State Government’s application had been approved, the sites would be getting minimal supply.

It was too late to reject the approval, she said, because it had happened too far back in 2009.

State Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said he knew the Tamworth council had successfully halted a social housing development due to restriction of services at the site.

Mayor Humphries said the battle was far from over, however, and the Moree community would continue to fight with her alongside.

The community is protesting Housing NSW’s lack of consultation with residents and the local council and also design features of the social housing units.
