Rain has cleared from the valley since Saturday noon. The Horton River at Rider peaked at 7.5 metres at 3pm, the Bureau of Meteorology advises. This peak will arrive at Gravesend around midnight.
At 3pm the Gwydir River at Pallamallawa was close to 10.5 metres, much earlier than expected, from the effect of local runoff. The river is expected to rise slowly to a slightly higher peak early Sunday morning.
The Mehi River at Moree was 7.97 metres at 4pm. The rate of rise is expected to slow this evening, reflecting the upstream river levels at the Chinook gauge.
Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Gravesend
- peak near 14.6 metres around 3am Sunday (27/11/11) with major flooding.
Implications: Inundation of large areas of farmland, in the area bounded by Biniguy, the Gwydir River, & Eaton Ponds Creek, Properties in this area become isolated. Local roads are likely to be impacted by floodwater.
Pallamallawa
- peak near 10.6 metres around 3am Sunday morning (27/11/11) with major flooding.
Implications: inundation of large areas of farmland, all road access between Pallamallawa and Gwydir Hwy is likely to be cut. Access to Moree is likely to be cut. Residents should monitor rises in the Gwydir River and localised flooding from the rain and prepare for predicted major flooding.
Yarraman Bridge
- peak near 7.45 metres Sunday (27/11/11) morning with major flooding.
Implications: Floodwater crosses the Moree – Mungindi Rd, no road access from Moree to Ashley, Garah, Boomi, Weemelah, & Mungindi. At the predicted flood height, residents in low-lying areas along the Gwydir River at Yarraman should move pumps and livestock to higher ground and monitor river heights for sudden rises and prepare for predicted major flooding Sunday morning.
Moree (Meehi River)
- peak near 10 metres Sunday night with major flooding.
Implications: Large areas of flooding in rural areas around Moree. Within Moree water is expected to cut the northern approach to the Mehi Bridge, near the old Ambulance Station. Moree is effectively divided into two by the Mehi River. Northern areas of Moree are predicted to have water in low lying areas; Herbert, Warialda, Gosport, Morton and Oak Streets and Orana, Drummond, Queen and Edward Streets. Residents in the Stonnington Lane and Chinamans Lane areas of Moree should also prepare for predicted major flooding Sunday afternoon.
This Flood Warning means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. This is especially important for people living, camping or working along the Gwydir and Mehi Rivers and streams in the Gwydir Valley and adjoining rural areas.
Local roads may close and driving conditions could become dangerous. Creeks and streams may break their banks placing livestock and equipment in low-lying paddocks at risk.
If flooding occurs:
• Farmers should move livestock, pumps and farm equipment to higher ground.
• Campers should note how close creeks and rivers are to their campsite; organise campsites so they can be quickly relocated; and stay in touch with fellow campers.
• Don’t walk or drive through floodwater: it may be deeper and faster flowing than you realise.
• Stay away from storm drains, creeks and rivers.
