Landholder property rights powers ahead

14 Jan, 2010 11:53 AM
Landholder property rights are gaining momentum in Moree like the rest of the country.

On Tuesday evening a meeting was held at the Royal Hotel to discuss the issue.

There was a strong turn out for the event with about 80 people in attendance and standing room only. A new committee was appointed for representatives of Moree to plan their attack on landholders legislation reform.

The Moree Property Rights Reclaimers Committee members are Jock Hunter, John Atkins, Frank O’Neill, Ros O’Neill and Tom Blackburn.

A large scale protest march is planned at Parliament House, Canberra, for the first day of parliament sitting on Tuesday, February 23.

The Moree Property Rights Reclaimers Committee spokesperson John Atkins said this was an issue for all Australians and had asked for support by the Moree community.

“This is an issue not only in the interest of land owners but each and every other person who depends upon primary production for their livelihood either directly or indirectly so please make your commitment to attend this rally and/or further meeting to be held Monday, January 18,” he said.

Janette and Bob Jones led Tuesday night’s meeting.

The couple are from Coffs Harbour on a five-day whistle stop tour of Northern Inland NSW. They have visited five towns over five days to gain support throughout NSW for the reform of land rights.

Mrs Jones passionately believes that native vegetation laws are violating property rights for landholders.

“We need to restore property rights under commonwealth constitutional rights,” she said.

Mrs Jones addressed the meeting detailing the plight of Peter Spencer.

Yesterday, Mr Spencer ended his 52-day hunger strike and came down from the platform tower at his property. This action was part of his campaign for a royal commission on land-clearing laws.

“It really frightens me that we don’t have any rights for our own land in this country.

“Peter is fighting for all of us,” Mrs Jones said.

If you would like to become involved with the Moree Property Rights Reclaimers Committee please call John Atkins on 0408 861 358 or Ros O’Neill on 6751 1234.
