A dangerous prison inmate who escaped a correctional facility in the New England area has been sentenced at Moree Local Court.

Douglas Boney, 40, turned himself into police at the Moree Police Station about 11.50pm on Sunday, where he was arrested and charged with one count of escaping from lawful custody.

Boney had been on the run since escaping from a Glen Innes correctional facility at about 2.30pm on Saturday, August 7.

Police described him as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, 180cm tall with a solid build, and black hair.

In sentencing on Monday, Magistrate Michael Holmes handed down a nine-month prison sentence after Boney pleaded guilty.

He will serve the additional time at the end of his original prison sentence.
