State Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries has hit out at the two independents contesting the Federal seat of Parkes, saying that they are all talk and no action.
Mr Humphries criticised Mick Colless and John Clements for being “a policy-free zone”, saying that unlike the Nationals, they lack the resources and experience to formulate and implement policy.
He also accused the two men - along with New England’s independent member Tony Windsor - of being whingers rather than problem solvers.
“These guys are a policy-free zone. They’ve got no answers. They make comment - they just don’t put anything up,” he said.
He contrasted their approach with that of Parkes MP Mark Coulton, who he said understood the intricacies of policy development, allowing him to produce positive results for the people of his electorate.
When asked if that meant that Mr Colless would be less effective than the incumbent, if he was to be elected on Saturday, Mr Humphries was dismissive: “Mick Colless will never get elected”.
He also ridiculed his attempt to “single-handedly” change the tax system, after Mr Colless promised to campaign for GST reform if he became the new member for Parkes.
Although Mr Humphries was prepared to praise Mr Colless’ ambition, he was critical of his inexperience and approach to politics.
“Good on him for having a go, but Mick needs to get a few more runs on the board locally. You can’t just complain about everything.”
But Mr Humphries saved his harshest words for Mr Clements, who he accused of being a “professional stirrer” more interested in generating headlines than solving problems.
“People like him are more trouble than they’re worth. They’re not in it to solve problems.”
He also derided Mr Clements’ claim to be able to “[work] with the intelligent and effective operators on both sides of politics.”
“His reputation has diminished over time - to the point that no one will work with him,” Mr Humphries said.
