Graniators fundraiser to give Moree children breakfast

06 Nov, 2008 10:42 AM
Volunteers will be knocking on your door this weekend to help raise money for the Graniators and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).

The money raised will be delegated nationally with about half the funds usually returning to Moree to help support the Graniators Breakfast Club.

ADRA donates the money back to the Moree Seventh Day Adventist Church who provides food donations to the club, which makes breakfast for school children five days per week.

Graniator Shirley Duncan said if it were not for the support of the church they would not be able to exist.

“We don’t get funds from anyone and if we didn’t have them we wouldn’t exist,” Mrs Duncan said.

The club sometimes gets up to 20 children per day with 31 the most they have ever had in one morning.

“A lot of kids don’t get breakfast so we give them a full stomach to go to school with,” she said.

Mrs Duncan said it was important for the children to have breakfast as it helped them to concentrate at school and gave them more energy.

“Any kids can come, even high schoolers if they want,” she said.

The group only has about three volunteers at the moment and desperately need more help.

“Anyone can do it; it is only between 7.30am and 8.30am, Monday to Friday,” she said.

The club also gives the children a chance to interact with their community members and the police as the Moree youth liaison officer Rob Edwards often attends.

“The older kids are becoming very helpful too; helping set up and wash up.”

People will be knocking on doors this Saturday and next Saturday to collect funds for the two charities.

If you would like to donate your time to help you can meet at the church at 2pm on Saturday.
