Power was cut to a number of residences and businesses along Gosport Street yesterday after a heavy vehicle brought down a power pole.
Moree Police Sergeant Grant Bell said the b-double driver reversed into the power pole, at the Caltex service station, subsequently bringing down the pole and causing low-voltage powerlines to come down on his truck.
Sergeant Bell said police attended the scene about 9.50am, with the driver staying inside his cab while Country Energy employees ensured power was cut.
The driver exited the vehicle about 10.25am after he was given the all-clear.
The 40-year-old driver, from Lightning Ridge, was uninjured, Sergeant Bell said.
It was not expected the driver would be charged, he said, although he had been issued with a traffic infringement notice for not reversing safely.
Police cordoned off traffic to a small stretch of Gosport Street during the operation, with emergency services evacuating the Caltex service station and advising nearby residents and business employees to remain inside.
The driver had pulled in to refuel at the service station, Sergeant Bell said, and had started to reverse after seeing the bowsers were in use.
The b-double was empty of cargo at the time of the accident.
Country Energy regional general manager Matt Patterson and Sergeant Bell agreed that the man had done the right thing by remaining in his vehicle until emergency services and Country Energy had advised him it was safe to exit.
Mr Patterson said about 25 households and businesses had their power cut, although most had it restored by 11.30am.
Country Energy were working to restore power to the remaining households by 3.30pm Wednesday, Mr Patterson said earlier in the afternoon.
