Finally was the cry that could be heard from Moree Plains Shire Councillor Theo Tzannes as the demolition machines ripped through the old buildings at the railway this week.
According to Cr Tzannes the old buildings have been a ‘problem child’ and eyesore in Moree for too long.
“Over the past 10 to 15 years the council have cleaned up the main street and the ovals,” he said.
“This is part of it. It has been a problem child for the town. At least they are clearing it, it’s great,” Cr Tzannes said.
“It will be cleaned up to everybody’s satisfaction.”
Demolition contractor for the job John Byrne said from Tuesday to today they pulled most of the building and old concrete down.
They have been pulling down two sheds and one of the concrete platforms.
They were given a three-day window where the tracks were closed down to move everything at least 10 metres from the tracks’ edge.
He said by the end of the month the whole area should be cleaned up.
Mr Byrne said the majority of the scrap material would be recycled and the concrete would be crushed on site and sold off.
Cr Tzannes and Mr Byrne talked about it all being back to a stage where it is made clean and keep clean until the southern end of the bypass is completed.
While Byrne Demolitions Pty Ltd is a company based in Young, they have used mostly local contractors.
Only two of their specialist machinery had to be brought in to do the job.
