 Call to watch your speed

Call to watch your speed

Slow down!

It’s a message Moree Plains and Gwydir Shire councils road and safety officer Kylie Kerr, along with Moree Police, hope is heard loud and clear.

According to Ms Kerr, some Moree drivers are some of the worst in the state for speeding.

And it’s not P-platers.

The highest recorded age group for speeding in Moree Plains Shire is 26-39 year-olds.

The number of speeders in that age bracket was well above the state average, Ms Kerr said.

Gwydir Street is one of the black spots for the shire.

“Speeding is not acceptable,” she said.

“Even five kilometres over, is just not okay.”

Ms Kerr said police had targeted the spot before and seen dramatic results, and it was hoped the new project coupled with police efforts would see drivers slow down.

She said as the road was not a highway or tourist area the offenders most likely weren’t tourists, but rather locals.

Traffic counters have been set up in a number of locations around the two shires. Speed alert signs will be rotated through a number of locations.

Ms Kerr said the counters could record the type of vehicle, their speed and the time of day, the only thing it couldn’t record was a number plate.

But she warned drivers not to think they wouldn’t get caught.

She said police would be targeting known areas for speeding drivers.

The counters and alert signs will be in place until the end of May.

The project follows a successful campaign in 2009 where council saw immediate results. However, Ms Kerr said, they weren’t long-term results. It is hoped the alerts coupled with police fines will send the message loud and clear: “Slow down - speeding is not accepted on Moree roads.”
